Set against a Trinidad landscape during the postwar era, the novel traces the life of a young girl, Annabelle Castello, from her mundane upbringing in rural Bristol village, Mayaro, to the affluent St. Clair area of urban Port-of-Spain, where she blossoms into an attractive young lady and experiences life s deceptions. At an early age, she had achieved more than she had ever dreamed and wished for: Fame, wealth and power - mainly due to her enticing beauty. As she grew older and her beauty began to fade, the need to embrace the simple values and happiness she had abandoned forty-five years before, grew more and more intense.
At age sixty-three, she impulsively abandoned her wealth and social status, and headed back to Bristol village in search of her past life and a baby girl whom she had left behind.
