After four years study, Anderson Woodbury is required to conduct and submit a dissertation. He has a topic: the analysis and control of psychological tension; but still needs to persuade a faculty member to be his PhD advisor. His ongoing involvement in university politics, and refusal to compromise his beliefs, test the goodwill of even his closest friends and supporters, including his life-long friend and confidante, April Brooker.
