June 1911
Beaumont, Texas
Evelyn Thurgood-Baron felt the compulsion to do something wild. Something wickedly bad. Something utterly vulgar, she thought with a smile. Unfortunately, as the heiress to the richest fortune in Texas -- Baron Oil, she'd rarely acted on these moments.
But the invigorating feeling of triumph far outweighed the risk of discovery when she'd stolen her father's silver liquor flask from the top drawer of his study desk. She'd liberally topped it off with his bourbon, a liquor she intended to heartily sample. Taking that flask yesterday was one tiny show of defiance, even though he wouldn't miss the container until tomorrow. And tomorrow she'd be back home from Beaumont.
If she was caught with the flask things would get messy. Her mother would have an apoplectic fit, put her lace hankie beneath her nose, and call for her father to handle the situation. Her father would rant and rave, intimidate her, then send her off to her bedroom for the rest of the evening.
What Evelyn wouldn't do for...freedom. But leaving wasn't an easy thing to do. She wasn't like other women.
