This is the third of a trilogy of novels centred on a young herald, Talia, with unusual gifts. It is written in a good flowing style but for me is weaker than its excellent predecessors. Unlike them, it came over to me as more of a conventional romance with some fantasy trappings, and it does not investigate moral issues like the earlier two novels do. Mercedes Lackey has thrown in some horror and some fighting, but I found her descriptions of these unconvincing - as if she felt she had to include them but wanted to get them over with as soon as she could. Some of the characterisation seemed more two-dimensional than in the earlier novels.
