Chapter One
David Gold, captain of the U.S.S. da Vinci,
liked his morning routines. He'd pamper himself
a little as he got out of his bed and prepared
for the new day. He would always make sure to
check his computer for official communiques then
personal notes as he sipped a hot cup of coffee,
usually humming a little something. Most
mornings that meant there was something from
home. After all, with a wife, children,
grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, someone
was usually sending him a note to stay in touch.
Everyone seemed to be leading such busy lives;
he longed to be beside them all, especially his
