The Perils of Royal Marriage
When Idi Amin became President of Uganda in 1971 after a military coup, the
Western world was slow to react, believing him to be a harmless, posturing
buffoon. It didn't dawn on the international community that he was also
dangerously insane until, in the interests of better diplomatic relations with
Britain, he volunteered to marry Princess Anne.
Royal fairy tales are brittle to the touch, especially alliances between blue
bloods and the ordinary red variety. Until relatively recent times, few people
lost much sleep over whether or not their royals were happily married. The
success or otherwise of all royal marriages was measured solely by the
