With a hard-eyed stare, Damien Knight, the earl of Winterley, swung the long-handled axe up over his head and slammed it down with savage force, cleanly splitting the upright log down the middle. The sharp crack of the blow ripped across the snow-frosted field like a gunshot, rousing the squabbling blackbirds that fed upon the frozen stubbled cornstalks. His movements were smooth, his mind blissfully blank as he threw down the axe, adjusted one of his thick leather gloves, and picked up the splintered halves of wood, stacking them on the fortresslike pile that had grown over the past weeks to looming proportions, as though no amount of fuel could build a fire capable of warming him. When Gaelen Foley put together her series she created characters who were a tempting blend of sinful and loving. She is truly a master story teller

loved this book. Damien was everything I love in a romance hero: strong, sexy, and kind-hearted. Miranda was spunky and fun. It did not surprise me at all that Ms. Foley wrote Miranda as a strong willed woman who falls head over heels in love, submitting to him as another reviewer wrote. She was seeking adoration from the beginning of the novel and she found it with Damien. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a quick read that entertains as well as touches the heart. Bravo, Ms. Foley!

The third the Knights Misc series, Lord of Ice is an improvement over Lord of Fire. The story is a good story and well thought out. I still have a real problem with Ms Foley's characterization of her hero and heroine. Her male and female leads still get too sticky sweet...too unlike real life. If I didn't know better, there are times in the book when I swear an old maid, who would faint at the word SEX, is the one doing the writing...then Ms Foley surprises me and goes into a pretty graphic sex scene in Damien's room and again on the boat to Brussels, which should be far more true to Damien and Miranda's characters than Miranda's "eyelashes fanned on her cheeks", or Damien's "manly blush". Damien shouldn't blush at ANYTHING after what he's been through and done. Miranda has been made too wishy washy...she can't be strong, especially after what she has been through at school and done with Trick, and then be shy and maidenly at the same time. (Miranda, you naughty girl, how did you know what to do in Damien's room, and evidently, so very well, too) Ms Foley needs to make up her mind how she wants her hero and heroine to behave and then stick to it. She wants them to be strong, earthy people. That's great, but don't try to have them be virginal, shy, blushing idiots, too. It's very irritating and makes me dislike the very characters the author wants me to love. There will be those readers who like this style of writing, and I think this is a great book for them. For me...I want strong men and women who go after what they want without the simpering, fanned eyelashes and maidenly blushes. Give me a man who doesn't "adore her pearl white shoulder", or any of that silliness. Ms Foley, a real man doesn't think like a simpering miss and you prove you know that!! You can do better.
