The Principality of Andorra, 1856

Yes, yes, very well then. Take out his heart."

For the first time since his beating began, Courtland MacCarrick's split, bloody sneer faltered. The general's impatient command seemed unreal to him, the words sounding hollow and indistinct, probably because Court could see nothing, blinded by blood dripping from a gash on his forehead and by his swollen lids.

The henchmen restraining him whaled two punches into his stomach, unable to contain their excitement at the prospect of killing off a mercenary, and a rival at that. Court could do little to defend himself in his condition and with his wrists bound.

"If you kill me," he bit out as he labored for a breath, "you know my men will avenge my death. You would no' risk that over simply payin' us what's owed?" His voice was thick with brogue, as it hadn't been since he'd left the Highlands years before.

Annalia finds injured mercenary Courtland MacCarrick at the edge of her land. Despite her misgivings, she takes him home in Andorra to recuperate. It turns out, Pascal, who hired Court and his men, is attempting to take over Annalia's country. Danger and action spans the European continent as Annalia and Court stays one step ahead of assassins. Annalia starts out haughty, snobbish and self-centered to the nth degree, and her hatred for the Scots colors everything. Despite her condescending behavior, Court is protective of Annalia. And both tries very hard to deny the intense passion and chemistry that burn between them. This denial has them constantly hedging, jousting for position, and fighting. It isn't until half way through the book, when Annalia finally begins to see past her prejudice and softens towards Court, and things start to progress. Honestly, Annalia and Court's antagonistic relationship gave me such a headache that I had a very difficult time to continue reading. I truly wanted to throw the book against the wall on more than one occasion. In the end I didn't care what happened to these two characters. Their stubborn nature took away from the romance of this read.
