Chapter 1

On an island in the Seine, against the nighttime backdrop of an ageless cathedral, the denizens of Paris came out to play. Emmaline Troy wound around fire-eaters, pickpockets, and chanteurs de rue. She meandered through the tribes of black-clad Goths who swarmed Notre Dame like it was the Gothic mother ship calling them home. And still she attracted attention.

The human males she passed turned their heads slowly to regard her, frowns in place, sensing something, but unsure. Probably some genetic memory from long ago that signaled her as their wildest fantasy or their darkest nightmare.

Emma was neither.

She was a co-ed -- a recent Tulane grad -- alone in Paris and hungry. Weary from another failed search for blood, she sank onto a rustic bench beneath a chestnut tree, eyes riveted to a waitress drawing espresso at a café. If only blood poured so easily, Emma thought. Yes, if it came warm and rich from a bottomless tap, then her stomach wouldn't be clenched in hunger at the mere idea.

If you like paranormal romance, this 1st instalment of the 'Immortal After Dark' series is a MUST READ. 1) GREAT characters : Lachlan, the hero, is a gorgeous alpha werewolf, very strong and very arrogant... his growing love for the heroine and his insecurity because of his (supposedly) unrequited feelings are very moving ; Emma, the heroine, part vampire part valkyrie, is one of the best heroine ever : starts as a weak 'girl' and then grows up, evolves, matures into a strong, confident woman ; Secondary characters are fantastic ! 2) Romance and hot love scenes. oh... and you have action too! ; 3) The environment (our modern world, with a LOT of werewolves, vampires, witches, valkyries, etc) created by Kresley Cole is very appealing ; 4) the story is fast paced and riveting. Once you start, you cannot put it down. This book is such a treat! Read it, you will not be disappointed!!!

Lachlain MacRieve, the Lykae king, imprisoned and tortured by the Vampire Horde for 150 years, finally broke free to find fate played a cruel hand with his eternal mate, Emmaline, a half vampire. Cole weaved pop culture and cheeky humor throughout the novel and extracted a number of chuckles from me. This is the first book of the Immortals After Dark series. I read the series out of order. While it did not distract me from enjoying the series, I thought this one is choppy and rushed compare to the other books. Emmaline got on my nerve. First, she was scared and timid. Then, all of a sudden, she got cheeky, and became strong and assertive. The courtship went from one step forward two steps back, to home run out of the blue. For me, the salvation is Lachlain. I feel his tortured soul slowly heal, from his crazed out of control rage in the beginning, to gaining his humanity and ability to love again. The ending was sweet and mellowed me out. I still give the book 4 stars because the wonderful world Cole painted and kept my interest to read more in the series.

This is the first story in Kresley Cole's world of vampires, werewolves, and valkyrie. It is nothing short of exciting and romantic till the very last page and makes you want to rush to the book store to buy the next one. This is a page turner that you won't want to put down.

Kresley Cole did a good job in creating her fantastic world and sticking by her rules. The characters were all well presented and the sex scenes, what there were of them, were hot. I was a little surprised there was not more sex, considering this book is supposed to be romantica. Still a good story, though.

This book was my introduction to Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark series. I really enjoyed learning about all of these new creatures. My enjoyment of the series as a whole may color my five star rating of this semi-debut (Cole actually started the series with a novella in the collection Playing Easy to Get). Watching the heroine grow strong and the hero tender is a treat.
