Four years ago I was injured and have not been able to read because of health issues. I still can not read hard back books. Since finding Diesel ebooks online and learning about downloadable ebooks, I can read again. Thank's for bringing part of my life back again.

Doom 3: Worlds on Fire
The year is 2144...and the battle over Earth's precious resources has raged for a century. With global economies in ruins and all-out world war more than a possibility, the U.S government turned to the Union Aerospace Corporation, giving it carte blanche on the legendary red planet of Mars in a desperate bid to construct an off-world outpost that might provide resources, a military advantage...as well as something so secret that even members of government don't have a clue about it.... Special Ops Marine Lieutenant John Kane was once a careerist simply glad to have a job, and couldn't care less about politics just as long as Uncle Sam's check cleared. But that was before he listened to his conscience and disobeyed a direct order. Busted down to private, Kane has been reassigned to the ""U.S. Space Marines"" -- the private army of the UAC -- with the prospect of becoming little more than a glorified security guard on Mars.... Now Lt. Kane's fate leads him to Mars City -- part environmental community, part lab center, and all owned and protected by the UAC. It's a strange world with a fatal environment, and the thousands who live and work within the city have already begun to think of themselves as Martians. And away from Mars City, at the strange ancient sites uncovered on the planet, a small squad of marines stand guard while scientists uncover wall glyphs and search for artifacts, having already found something that is so far amazing and inexplicable -- including the relic called ""U1,"" nicknamed ""the Soul Cube"" -- and unknown to all, the bringer of destructive chaos and unspeakable horror....

Mars City
22.697 degrees North latitude,
48.222 degrees West longitude

Ian Keliher walked up to what loked to be an enormous portal, the steel plates sealed tight. He tapped it, then turned to the three men following behind him.

"So -- what's on the other side?" he asked. Two of the men -- Elliot Swann, the company lawyer, and Jack Campbell, the head of security -- turned to the man in uniform. Medals and colorful bars spoke of experience; three stars indicated a general.

A general in the space marines, Kelliher thought. Less a U.S. government military unit than a Union Aerospace Corporation private security force.

"Mars," the general replied. "Right now, nothing but a big flat expanse of red dirt and rock."

Kelliher nodded. He knew the project was behind schedule, even though no one had told him so. Nobody ever told him the truth about the problems. Nobody ever told him anything they thought he didn't want to hear.

Worst of all, he'd have to go back Earthside and report to his father, the great Tommy Kelliher. Sitting in his castle-like Newport Beach estate, monit ... read full excerpt from: Doom 3: Worlds on Fire ebook

4 out of 5 stars Doom - The Mini Series. 10/30/2009
Reviewer: Mike Thomas from Pontypridd, NA GB
This was an good book, capturing the spirit of the game, even though the plot of the game does'nt happen untill two thirds of the way through the book. The characters are well fleshed out, a good start to a series.

An enjoyable read, however it seems to be unfinished and cut short. If you read the last doom series by Dafydd ab Hugh and Brad Linaweaver then your expectations will definitely be set a bit high, there is a lot better character development in this book but there is a lot less action and it doesn't make you feel as nostalgic either; as there was very little reference to a lot of the games specific events and "memorable moments". I do feel that the plot in this book has had much more thought and considerably more emphasis is placed on the aliens and foreign artifacts than the last doom series books. The editor missed quite a few places in the book which makes it feel cheapened somehow,(not excusable for the digital copies) but not anywhere near as bad as the editorial work in Dafydd ab Hugh and Brad Linaweaver's books. From what I gather the author was the original writer for the story that went into the game so really the game lacks story more than the story lacks game moments. Again comparing the two series; there isn't the solitary, lonely, scared feeling in the doom 3 series books like the original doom books, if you like horror and suspense go get the original doom books, if you are a fan of great character development and serious wicked scifi then pick this up asap.
