The faint slam of another car door echoed through the freezing rain and a figure encased in a trench coat ran for cover. A slim hand was tugging the handle by the time he reached the office door. Icy pellets stung Dane's exposed cheeks and slithered down into the collar of his coat, so he didn't bother with niceties. He curved an arm around the bulky, gray figure and pulled a surprisingly slim body hard against him. A high octave shriek resonated between the glass door and his ear as her feet slipped out from under her with all the finesse of a marionette who'd been cut loose from her strings. "Hang on for the ride, honey," he whispered in the vicinity of her ear as he pulled open the door and ushered them both into the motel office. The rush of warm air that hit him full in the face set off a chain reaction not unlike stinging nettles across his exposed skin. Then his companion tilted her head so she could get a look at him.
