Romance ebook title: Never Let Me Go
NEVER LET ME GO is a traditional romance set in 1814 Regency England. A variety of characters are woven into the fabric of the story--four-footed creatures, male and female children, oldsters falling into a romance of their own, a few accidents, a vicious villain given his comeuppance, some silly marriage prospects, and a handsome rake thrown into the mix. There are some giggles, too, as readers experience heartache along with the hero and heroine desperately seeking their path to happiness. Reckless and restless, at twenty-three, Horatio Tallwood-Smythe receives a small inheritance upon his father's demise. He purchases a lieutenant's colors and heads for adventure in the English army. Horatio is a handsome, well-built man, a couple inches less than six feet tall, with a good sense of humor, and a way with women. He loves females, especially ones with long legs and prodigious bosoms and hips. Now in his thirty-six year, Horatio has been in the King's army for a dozen years, fighting on the Iberian Peninsula, and working his way to France with Wellington. Responsibilities for a number of young men under his care, plus what he's faced and saw during those war years, change him drastically. Still handsome and brawny, he is more strait-laced, stern-faced, and lacking in humor than he was when he was young. Bored with peace negotiations, he also has had his fill of adventure. The war is winding down and Bonaparte is on Elba. When he unexpectedly learns he's inherited a viscount's title and what goes with it, Horatio decides to sell out of the army and accept a different set of responsibilities. Little does he know what those responsibilities will entail. Anabel Satterley is just the kind of woman that Horatio would lust for. Nearly six feet tall and although not "fat," she is clearly voluptuous. Not beautiful, only pretty, she has lovely hair, clean features (especially her hazel eyes), and a clear complexion. As a child, she was ungainly and shy, hating the way she looked because of her height. She grew up intelligent, well read, sharp-witted, loves animals, and at five and twenty, uninterested in the men she meets on the Continent. Some ignore her because of her size. The rest try to seduce her. She no longer seeks romantic love (she says), and has no intention of marrying when her childish daydreams for a husband and family disappoint her. When Anabel's mother dies while birthing her, her father blames his adored wife's demise on the babe. Sebastian Satterley abandons his daughter, leaving her with his childless sister and her husband to raise, he takes off for the Continent seeking adventures of his own. When his widowed sister and husband, pass on, Sebastian returns briefly to England to reunite with his grown-up daughter, and dragged her back to Europe with him. The next stop in their travel agenda is Egypt. In Cairo Sebastian purchases a treasure map. When he is kidnapped, not hearing from him or knowing what happened to him, Anabel disguises herself in her father's clothes and arranges for a berth on a ship sailing back to England. Horatio and Anabel meet on a deserted country lane in Surrey, England. The feisty female and the domineering, former colonel clash from the start. That's when the fun begins.
