Romance title: Carousel
Jaci Eastman has made it on her own, and no one can take away that sense of accomplishment and independence. Her photographic work appears in all the national magazines, for despite her rough beginnings, she has maintained the ability to view the world through the eye of an artist. Only through her pictures does she find fulfillment. A solitary person, she feels she needs no one. Love and romance are fairy tales for children, and have no place in her life. As far as she is concerned, if she can't photograph it, it doesn't exist. So how can she explain the blurry images that appear in the background of the lead black horse on the restored Dentzel carousel? Although faint, all the images are of a man, dressed darkly and with dark features. When she prints enlargements, silver eyes, stormy and haunted, cry out to her in pain, begging her for something she can't identify. Knowing she hasn't photographed a ghost, she returns to the carousel but as her camera clicks away, the carousel operator suddenly doubles over. In the process of trying to reach him, her hand grabs the black horse. Immediately, an electric shock paralyzes her motion. The carousel spins faster, the motion throwing her against the horse. She closes her eyes and clutches at the horse's wooden neck as she feels herself falling. When Jaci opens her eyes, she finds herself staring into the silver gaze of Nicholas Westbrooke, horse breeder in Philadelphia, in the year 1874. It doesn't take Jaci long to shatter Nicholas's illusions about women, passion and love. She is outrageous in her dress, manners and language. She runs around his horse track for exercise, cooks food he has never before tasted, and she even teaches science to his niece. Yet he finds her irresistible. Jaci definitely doesn't want to get involved with a nineteenth century, chauvinistic male with medieval views on a woman's role. While she desperately seeks a way back to her own time, she struggles over her lose of independence and self-worth, and yet she becomes inexplicably drawn to Nicholas. The most she can extol from him are kisses and caresses, and she longs for some magic just beyond her understanding. When a skating accident drops Nicholas into freezing water, she clings to him, refusing to let him die. His stormy, silver gaze begs her for help, and she realizes Nicholas is the man in her carousel photographs. Inexplicably, his image had crossed time to actually bring her to Wildwood. The accident has disastrous results. As an honorable man in charge of his own destiny and capable of taking care of his family, his mind becomes crippled along with his legs. He cares little for what occurs around him and even less about himself. Always the survivor, Jaci helps him understand that it's all right to depend on someone else, and he finds he's still capable of acting like a man, even if his legs fail to support him. Together, they discover a passion that transcends physical barriers. She falls in love, that elusive state that can't be photographed but that she now believes exists. Unable to train his horses, Nicholas spends his days carving; a pastime from his youth. Jaci recognizes the horse he carves is the horse in her carousel photographs. A horse that didn't yet exist in Nicholas' time brought her through time to help him. If he completes the horse, will she be transported back to the twenty-first century? Title: Carousel

5 out of 5 stars Captivating 10/12/2009
Reviewer: Michael Cayley from Hayling Island, Hampshire GB
This romance about a contemporary American woman who is suddenly transported back in time to the 19th century is superb and captivating. The characters are rounded and believable, and genuinely evolve; there is comedy from the clash of two different cultures with different expectations about the role of women; and Barbara Baldwin has done her historical research well. Above all, she has written a tale of the redemption of her hero and heroine as they emerge from very different traumas. I thoroughly recommend the novel.
