Baylee Mitchell will do anything to help her friend, John Belvue, a full-blooded Choctaw Indian that lives in the bayou. Arrested for poaching and assault on a game warden, Baylee bails him out of jail. After her encounter with lawyers, she doesn't put much trust in them, and John Belvue's lawyer is no exception. He is too forward, too handsome, and is entwining himself into her life. And she doesn't find out that he isn't John's lawyer from the beginning which adds fuel to the flame. Dane Winslow's father is supposed to be defending John, but he's had a heart attack. Dane Winslow is a Texas DA who has come to Louisiana to help his father build a case for John Belvue. While Dane's father recuperates from a heart attack, Dane has agreed to take on his father's active cases by gathering information and evidence in which his father can use to build a defense. The only problem is Baylee Mitchell, the history teacher from Texas. Dane finds out quickly that the people along the bayou are closed mouthed and impossible to get information from. But they seem to love and trust Baylee Mitchell, and Baylee is the only person who seems to know everything there is to know about John Belvue. If he could talk to John Belvue himself, it might have made his job easier, but John Belvue has taken off to the deep part of the bayou. Reluctantly joining forces to accomplish a goal, Dane and Baylee work together which complicates things even more since there is an attraction between the two that neither can deny, and both are wary of. Despite the sparks flying between them, they uncover a scheme to buy up John's property and other properties along the bayou. And that seems to have a direct connection to John's recent problems.
