Four works by the remarkable late-19th Century/early 20th Century sea captain and writer Joseph Conrad (1857-1924): "Almayer's Folly" (short work, 1895), "An Outcast of the Islands" (1896), "The Nigger of the Narcissus: A Tale of the Forecastle" (1897), "Tales of Unrest" (five short stories, 1898), "Heart of Darkness" (1899, the novella on which Francis Ford Coppola's film "Apocalypse Now" is based), and "Lord Jim" (1900). Two excerpts from "The Nigger of the Narcissus", the first from the preface and the second from Chapter 3: "A work that aspires, however humbly, to the condition of art should carry its justification in every line. And art itself may be defined as a single-minded attempt to render the highest kind of justice to the visible universe, by bringing to light the truth, manifold and one, underlying its every aspect. It is an attempt to find in its forms, in its colours, in its light, in its shadows, in the aspects of matter and in the facts of life, what of each is fundamental, what is enduring and essential - their one illuminating and convincing quality - the very truth of their existence. The artist, then, like the thinker or the scientist, seeks the truth and makes his appeal," and "Jimmy drank a tin mugful of coffee, and, after bullying first one and then another, went to bed. He remained there most of the time, but when it suited him would come on deck and appear amongst us. He was scornful and brooding; he looked ahead upon the sea; and no one could tell what was the meaning of that black man sitting apart in a meditative attitude and as motionless as a carving".
