I think this story-line had great potential, unfortunately I felt disconnected (and often disgusted) with the main characters. The "heroine" of the story is just so pitiful I could barely stand to read it. I understand this is a romance novel, but honestly, romance can come with some self respect - she let her lover treat her like dirt and kept running back to him because she was so desperately "in love" ...after knowing him for a day. It's a fantasy novel, there's other powers at work etc., but this was just too ridiculous. Her feelings were way too over-dramatic and far too sudden. In many instances, the plot felt forced, like the author just wanted to throw everything out and move on to a different point. Also, the dialogue was too contrived for my taste. After every significant event, the characters would have a 'discussion' about what took place that would over explain the whole thing - that should have been saved for the surrounding text and not placed in a conversation. Honestly, I would recommend getting a different book, something with a more believable central relationship and better writing. Maybe I just have my standards set too high, but I feel that there is no reason a romance novel can't be entertaining and well-written.
