ff The throne room hadn't changed much since he'd left, just enough to be unsettling. The curtains were no longer a heavy brocade, but had been replaced with rich, black velvet. The long dinner tables on the far side of the room, once oak, were now mahogany. The two heavy, ornate thrones on the dais were the same ones he remembered, though; the smaller of the two used to be his own.

He walked over to it, forgetting for a moment that he wasn't alone, and ran his hand along the arm of the chair. The wood was smooth and warm to the touch, just like he remembered.

A shuffling sound from behind him startled Keir out of his memories and he stumbled quickly back from the thrones, pulling his hand away like he'd been burnt. He glanced guiltily at Christophe, then down at the floor, shoving his hands into his pockets so he wouldn't forget again. This place wasn't his anymore. It hadn't been for a long time.

He traced the curves of color through the marble floor for a moment before he realized that something was different about Christophe now. He looked back up slowly. Keir didn't know how Christophe had gotten it off, but the trench coat was hanging folded over his arm. His wings were spread out behind him and it seemed like they could reach both ends of the throne room if he stretched them just a little further.
