Scene One: The Party

"We don't have to go to the party," Mike said. He reached for Rick's hands, twining his fingers through. "We could stay home, and..." A shrug, used to replace words. Once, Rick found this habit endearing. Now, not so much.

"We could knit? We could play Parcheesi?" He pulled his hand away and ran it through his short black hair, exasperated. "Rearrange the front parlor? Watch Home & Garden TV? What?"

"Never mind." Mike's voice was flat. He pulled the gate leading to Master D's house open. "It's probably better we go to the party."

"What ever." The words were short, sharp edged. "Let's see if we even remember how to have fun. It's been so long since we've been out that I'm not sure I know how to party anymore."

"I'm sure," Mike replied, "That it'll come back to you."

Loud techno music blared from a black tower of speakers. Bright lights flashed in every corner, ricocheting off a disco ball suspended in the center of the room. Thirty or forty sweaty men were crammed onto the dance floor, writhing in time to the beat.

Rick smiled, and took a drink from the tray proffered by one of Master D's serving boys. His friend's lifestyle might be a bit...unconventional, he thought, but he sure did know how to throw a good party.

Mike was standing near his side, mumbling something. The words that weren't drowned out by the music wound up obscured by a coughing fit.

"What's that?" Rick asked, turning toward him, eyes rolling as he stated the obvious. "I couldn't hear you."
