Reader Review: In “ The Lady Chosen”, the 1st book in the Bastion Club Series, we meet Tristan Wemyss, Earl of Trentham, an ex-spy who must wed within a year or lose his inheritance. With many maiden aunts and other unmarried females in his family to support, losing his inheritance is unthinkable. He and his fellow ex-spies decide to set up a haven where they can exchange information on their matrimonial prospects, and Tristan is charged with finding a suitable location. Little does he know that he will find much more than a suitable location for the club, he will also find the woman he will love. Leonora Carling is the neighbor to the Bastion Club and the victim of several recent home invasions. Intrigued by both Leonora and the suspicious events, Tristan bends his talents to uncovering the mystery burglar and to charming Leonora. Leonora, who has no use for marriage, may be new to the sexual tension vibrating between her and Tristan, but she's willing to explore further, believing that nothing permanent can come of it. When Tristan insists that she marry him, the battle of wills commences. This is a great start to the Bastion Club series. I love this book and the rest of the series.
Tristan Wemyss, Earl of Trentham, never expected he'd need to wed within a year or forfeit his inheritance. But he is not one to bow to the matchmaking mamas of the ton. No, he will marry a lady of his own choosing. And the lady he chooses is the enchanting neighbor living with her family next door. Miss Leonora Carling has beauty, spirit and passion; unfortunately, matrimony is the last thing on her mind . . .
To Leonora, Tristan's kisses are oh-so-tempting, but once bitten, forever shy, she has determinedly turned her back on marriage. But Tristan is a seasoned campaigner who will not accept defeat. And when a mysterious man attempts to scare Leonora and her family from their home, Tristan realizes he's been given the perfect excuse to offer his services—as protector, seducer and, ultimately, husband.

I thought the premise of the Bastion Club is interesting. Seven eligible, handsome, heroic ex-spies, find themselves come into inheritance and become the epicenter of attention of eager ladies and ambitious mamas of the ton. Tristen and Leonara's story, unfortunately, falls flat for me. Slow is the operative word. The story took forever to advance. The attraction took a long time to develop. I liked Tristen. He is intelligent and resourceful, knows what he wants and sets about to get it. Leonara, a self-made spinster, on the other hand, is just plain annoying. She took the joy out of the romance. After the first night of passion, she turned cold and distance, and wasted many pages spurning Tristen's pursuit to marry her. Whereas Tristen was honest with his feelings and intentions, Leonara hid behind some outdated conviction, wanted the physical side of the relationship but refused to engage her feelings. The explanation for this reluctance was not forthcoming until I was on the brink of giving up on the novel. The love scenes were evocative, but I wished the rest of the story was not so bland.
