1. Introduction

An intuitive understanding of temperature, associated with the sensations of hot and cold, has been recognized since ancient times. However it was not until 1592, when Galileo invented the air thermoscope, that quantitative thermometry began. Extensive investigations of various types of liquid-in-glass thermometers in the 17th century led to the establishment of the Fahrenheit temperature scale (first reported in 1724) and the Celsius (or centigrade) temperature scale (1742–1744). Some 100 years later in the middle of the 19th century, based on the principles of thermodynamics, Lord Kelvin (William Thomson) laid the foundation of the thermodynamic temperature scale.
