Reader Review: I'm not a fan of zombies, and had this book been by anyone else I probably would have passed on it. But Mira Grant (a pen name for Seanan McGuire), is an amazing world-builder with a love of deadly viruses, and a life-long fan of horror films. While parts of this book were horrific, it didn't exceed my very limited capacity for horror. She has mentioned that her love of the TV series "The West Wing" played a role in how she developed the politics in this novel. I was hooked from page 1, and the entire trilogy was an amazing read. Book 1 and 2 were nominated for a Hugo, and I suspect 3 will be as well.

FEED is the electrifying and critically acclaimed novel of a world a half-step from our own---a novel of geeks, zombies, politics and social media.

You can’t kill the truth.
—GEORGIA MASON
Nothing is impossible to kill. It’s just that sometimes after you kill something, you have to keep shooting it until it stops moving. And that’s really sort of neat when you stop to think about it.
—SHAUN MASON
Everyone has someone on the Wall.
No matter how remote you may think you are from the events that changed the world during the brutal summer of 2014, you have someone on the Wall. Maybe they’re a cousin, maybe they’re an old family friend, or maybe they’re just somebody you saw on TV once, but they’re yours. They belong to you. They died to make sure that you could sit in your safe little house behind your safe little walls, watching the words of one jaded twenty-two-year-old journalist go scrolling across your computer screen. Think about that for a moment. They died for you.
Now take a good look at the life you’re living and tell me: Did they do the right thing?

One ...Title: Feed March 12, 2013 Wow, just WOW! Thanks to friend and fellow book blogger Kristin (@mybookishways), she let me know that I must, MUST read this book. So after waiting next line to download the audiobook from the library, I got right on. Oh my goodness. I love zombies, but man this book was the icing on the cake. If this is not made into a movie soon, I will be extremely pissed. George Romero, I hope you are reading this because this will make you proud. Mira Grant (aka Seanan McGuire), thank you.

Book Review: Feed (Newsflesh #1) by Mira Grant
Reviewer:
Feed is set sometime in the future. After a virus broke out, known as Kellis-Amberlee, which was created to cure cancer, the flu and the common cold, it also killed people and brought them back to life. Well technically speaking. When the outbreak first took place, the news media were oblivious to it; they called it a hoax, a prank. But the world of bloggers spoke the truth, they let the world know something bad was happening and the big new stations were lying to them. Come to find out, the bloggers were right and unfortunately, millions had to die before others listened.
No twenty years later, the world has become more civilized. They have learned to stay safe with zombies roaming around. And the biggest job you can have: blogging. Bloggers/journalists are highly sought out. So when Georgia and Shaun Mason (brother-sister blogging combo) and their friend and tech genius, Buffy get accepted to get the biggest job of all, things take a turn for the worst. Things and people they thought they knew were nothing but lies.
I could talk about this book all freaking day. This is one of the most unique books I have ever read. There is so much to grab from it, it is hard not to find something to love about it. The world Mira Grant has created is incredible. People are tested at every turn to make sure they are not infected. If you are in a room and someone is infected, you are all on lockdown until helps comes. No exceptions. But this has become a part of everyday reality. People are scared and there are those who are trying to use that fear to their advantage.
This book was more than just a book about zombies. It showed how much we depend on others to tell us the truth. It showed us that there are few who will do what they have to to tell the world the truth. That is what makes Georgia (aka George) and Shaun such great characters. Georgia is more stable, Shaun is a bit wild. They are inseparable and depend on each other a lot. Their foster parents aren’t the greatest; they use them to raise their sales basically. But George and Shaun do just fine as long as they are together. They know they are at risk everyday, but they do what others don’t. I love how the book also goes back and forth and gives us entries from our characters’ blogs. It adds something to the story. We get to know more from our characters this way. More of their thoughts and their feelings come through.
The plot to this book is incredible. The more you go the people you think you know you don’t. We get twists from every direction. It builds and builds until it erupts. I was brought to tears near the end of this. I couldn’t believe what happened. I listened to the audiobook version of this and the narrator, Paula Christensen, gave George such a great realistic feel especially at this specific scene. This had one of the most surprising climaxes ever. I would not have seen that coming.
So just as Kristin has told me, I will tell you, this is a must read. It is a big book, but it doesn’t drab. It is emotional, political, and action-packed from start to finish. A very captivating story that I think everyone will love. Make sure you check this out.
