Reader Review: One of a selection of Star Wars novels that were only ever released in ebook format, this one sits very early in the New Jedi Order series and explains how the Yuuzhan Vong fist entered the Star Wars galaxy and their early dealings with the Mandalorian bounty hunters and more specifically the ever practical Boba Fett. You read the story of Yuuzhan Vong hiring the Mandalore as their tame mercenaries and how Boba Fett and the other Mandalore realise that some times, regardless of how many credits you are getting, you need to fight for the other side.

BONUS: This original novella includes an excerpt from Star Wars: Republic Commando: Hard Contact  and an interview with the author.

On the surface, it seems like just another routine contract for Boba Fett and his Mandalorian commandos, but the mystery client who hires them to start a small war is more dangerous than any of them can possibly imagine. When the Yuuzhan Vong invasion force sweeps into the galaxy, the Mandalorians find they’re on the wrong side–fighting for an alien culture that will bring about the end of their own.

Now Fett has to choose between his honor and the survival of his people. Since he’ s a practical man, he’s determined help the resistance beat the Yuuzhan Vong–even if it means working with a Jedi agent. Trouble is, no one trusts a man with Fett’ s reputation. So convincing the New Republic that they’re fighting on the same side is a tall order. Denounced as traitors, Fett’s Mandalorians need to stay one step ahead of their Yuuzhan Vong paymasters–and the Republic who sees them as collaborators with the most destructive enemy the galaxy has ever faced. . . .

Perfect little gem

November 29, 2009
Reviewer: A reader from Kent, UK

Once you get to know Karen Traviss's Star Wars work, it is obvious why she is beloved by Mando & trooper re-enactors alike: she has the rare gift of breathing life into what would normally be only secondary characters in mainstream Star Wars, and making them memorable, and likeable. They stick with you, long after you have finished reading. Karen knows her military stuff, and she also knows what it's like to feel like a soldier. This undoubtedly benefitted Boba Fett, who got lifted by Karen from the shady twilight of bounty hunting to the spotlight of almost reputable soldiering.
The novella is short, but very entertaining and well written, no previous New Jedi Order knowledge required. I read it in one sitting, and will certainly read it again, just to savour it. Thank you, Karen, keep it up!
