Reader Review: Chess’ assignment is a case surrendered by another debunker, which is odd but even more curious is he’s now missing. His notes were skimpy and the location is the Mercy Lewis Second School, which is dead smack in Slobag’s territory. Things are never simple for Chess so added to the mix is a burned down building belonging to Bump with a dead body layered with dark magic. Of course, he’s demanding that Chess figure out what’s going on. She and Terrible are still keeping their relationship undercover but she believes he’s got trust issues with her and wonders whether she can rely on the information he provides her. Of course, Lex has a connection to the school and continues to provide complications for Chess as she juggles her now “platonic” relationship with him and her committed one with Terrible. The case was pretty interesting with lots of subterfuge and a surprising relationship that Chess didn’t see coming. That intrigue posed a number of challenges for Chess with an ending climax that has her making the choice of her lifetime. Chess and Terrible are continuing to manage a relationship, charting new ground for both of them. We get more glimpses of a childhood that are even more tragic than I ever imagined. Though it further reinforces an understanding of why she chooses to anesthetize herself, Chess seems to be willing to challenge her typical responses to intimacy and hurt. We see her growing, still making some questionable choices but learning the difference between sex for pleasure and intimacy. Terrible continues to astound us with incredible insights, even though his articulation may be a bit rough. Their relationship continues to be a compelling aspect of the series. I’m still obsessed with this series and cannot wait to listen to the next book. The characters are incredibly complex once you get beneath their veneer and beyond the things they do to survive. The cases involving the ghosts and magic are unique and unpredictable. It's a perfect prescription for great storytelling.
READING, WRITING, AND RAISING THE DEAD
When Chess Putnam is ordered by an infamous crime boss—who also happens to be her drug dealer—to use her powers as a witch to solve a grisly murder involving dark magic, she knows she must rise to the challenge. Adding to the intensity: Chess’s boyfriend, Terrible, doesn’t trust her, and Lex, the son of a rival crime lord, is trying to reignite the sparks between him and Chess.
Plus there’s the little matter of Chess’s real job as a ghost hunter for the Church of Real Truth, investigating reports of a haunting at a school in the heart of Downside. Someone seems to be taking a crash course in summoning the dead—and if Chess doesn’t watch her back, she may soon be joining their ranks.
As Chess is drawn into a shadowy world of twisted secrets and dark violence, it soon becomes clear that she’s not going to emerge from its depths without making the ultimate sacrifice.
