Reader Review: This is the 5th novel in the Nightrunner series, and it continues the strong character development and absorbing plots that were such outstanding features of the previous novels. Many times in ongoing series the middle book of each arc suffers, being unable to stand on its own. I've never felt this way about any book in this series. Each has an intriguing problem that is brought to a satisfying conclusion without cliffhangers that leave you unhappy. You're curiosity is certainly aroused about the over-arcing plot that ties the series together, but the end of each novel leaves you in a nice breathing place before the next book/round starts. In this book specifically we're given a fulfilling mixture of tense action, red herrings, a tangle of motives, false trails followed, and several mysteries solved by the end of the story. While I wasn't sure it was a good choice by the author to let us in on the thoughts of one of the villains near the beginning of the tale, it did end up helping me keep the tangles in the multiple plot lines clear. Character development also deepened with more emphasis on people who were supporting cast in the first arc, but there is still plenty of time spent with Seregil and Alex. I'm eagerly awaiting another entry in this series, but without the frustration that occurs when I'm left hanging on that cliff.
The Nightrunners are back in this gripping novel full of Lynn Flewelling’s trademark action, intrigue, and richly imagined characters.
More than the dissolute noblemen they appear to be, Alec and Seregil are skillful spies, dedicated to serving queen and country. But when they stumble across evidence of a plot pitting Queen Phoria against Princess Klia, the two Nightrunners will find their loyalties torn as never before. Even at the best of times, the royal court at RhÍminee is a serpents’ nest of intrigue, but with the war against Plenimar going badly, treason simmers just below the surface.
And that’s not all that poses a threat: A mysterious plague is spreading through the crowded streets of the city, striking young and old alike. Now, as panic mounts and the body count rises, hidden secrets emerge. And as Seregil and Alec are about to learn, conspiracies and plagues have one thing in common: The cure can be as deadly as the disease.
