Reader Review: Such a great storyline, such a disappointment. There was so much potential in this book, unfortunately it wasn't used. Rob's treatment of Caro on their wedding day was appalling. I was just as angry and as hurt as Caro. The idea of revenge was sweet but it didn't work out as expected. Yes he became obsessed with Cleo but he never though of his wife (not even when he knew she had run off and was missing). How can a husband put a mistress before his duty? He didn't even compare his wife to his mistress. If he had, I think I would've been more satisfied because then I'd be able to say that he fell in love with his wife but really he fell in love with his mistress, thoughts of his wife didn't take place. When he found out about her deception he started to court his wife but this didn't make it better for me because by then he was already in love with her as his mistress. In the end he stated that she should've given him time to come to himself and I felt like screaming out 'What after you bedded other women after taking your vows?' because surely if not for his wife as mistress he would've taken another but then again he hadn't been able to bed anyone in the 2 months after he got wed so I dont know. Caro's idea of revenge was good but she didn't use it like I expected. I wanted her to play hard to get, drive him crazy with lust and jealousy, snob him off but it didn't last as long as expected. She gave in too quickly. After he found out abt her deception he had the nerve to turn her rights in to wrongs. Being wrong and guilty did not stop him from turning the table on her, forgetting how he hurt her and instead making her feel bad abt what she did. It was disappointing.

Regency period.

From unloved bride...

Caroline Besford will no longer be any man's pawn. Her father forced her into marriage with a man who refused to share her bed. In making her escape, Caro became Cleo--an untouched courtesan! Amazingly, the husband who ignored his plain bride is now pursuing her!

...to adored mistress!

But as Cleo is drawn into a web of lies and deception, she cannot deny her growing desire for her husband. And what will the colonel do when he discovers that his darling Cleo is his dowdy wife, Caroline?

The book is well worth the price! Lady Caroline fell in love with the Colonel during a ball but she was plump and a bit plain so she was delighted at the thought of marriage to him but she had no idea of the means her father took to ensure the marriage until her wedding day! The Colonel quite insulted her after her wedding but she still loved him (though she claimed not to). They didn't see each other again for 2 mos. and she lost the weight and her friend persuaded her to become a courtesan - and her husband became instantly enamored of her (without even recognising her!). It all works out but I think she forgave him too easily and I was a bit upset that he still referred to her by her alias during 'heated' moments. It almost came off like he only loed her facade. All in all - it was an enjoyable read!
