Reader Review: I'm a huge fan of Linda Howard's full-length romances, so I checked out this smaller serial romance simply because of her. I was pleasantly surprised; it's something of a departure from Howard's typical romantic suspense. Dante Raintree is a wealthy casino owner who also happens to be a magical being: he has the power to summon and control fire. In his capacity as a casino owner, he suspects Lorna Clay is counting cards and calls her up to his lair, intending to put the fear of Dante into her. In fact, Lorna was not cheating, but has her own magical abilities that allow her to win big against casinos, of whose owners she is understandably wary. However, when Dante meets Lorna in the flesh, like recognizes like and, thereafter, he is unwilling to let her go under any circumstances. Needless to say, Lorna is not happy with Dante's possessive streak. Their mercureal relationship becomes even more complicated when it is discovered that the magical Ansara family, longtime enemies of the Raintrees, have regained strength and numbers sufficient to once more wage war, and the first battle is against Dante. Without Lorna, everything Dante holds dear will be destroyed; but can he persuade Lorna to summon her complementary strength in his cause, and will she remain with him in the end? An exciting read!
Two hundred years after the Raintree clan defeated and abandoned them on a small Caribbean Island, the Ansara wizards are rising again to take on their bitterest foes. Despite their extraordinary powers and supernatural origin, the Raintree have largely blended into the modern world. They are bankers, cops, husbands, wives and lovers in the society of humankind. But now, from Nevada to North Carolina, the rejoined battle will measure the endurance of their people. It will test their loyalties and relationships. And it will force upon them all new lives they could barely have imagined before.

Raintree: Inferno
"What's her name?" he asked.
"Lorna Clay," replied his chief of security, Al Rayburn.
"Is that her real name?"
"It checks out."
If Al hadn't already investigated her, Dante would have been disappointed. He paid Al a lot of money to be efficient and thorough.
"At first I thought she was counting," said Al.
"But she doesn't pay enough attention."
"She's paying attention, all right," Dante murmured. "You just don't see her doing it." A card counter had to remember every card played. Supposedly counting cards was impossible with the number of decks used by the casinos, but no casino wanted a card counter at its tables. There were those rare individuals who could calculate the odds even with multiple decks.
"I thought that, too," said Al. "But look at this piece of tape coming up. Someone she knows comes up to her and speaks, she looks around and starts chatting, completely misses the play of the people to her leftand doesn't look around even when the deal comes back to her, she just taps that finger. And damned if she didn't win. Again."

I'm a big fan of Linda Howard and this book didn't disappoint. Dante is a man with a big burden. He's the leader of the Raintree clan and responsible for keeping his family safe and providing a new generation, which his brother reminds him of very often. Dante posesses and controls an elemental power: Fire. Then he meets Lorna, a mystery woman who has unusual powers of her own. He initially mistakens her for a member of the Ansara, but this is proven wrong after a deadly attack. Together, they embark in a dangerous journey, but at the same time, discover how deeply they love each other.
This book is the first one of the Raintree series, so be prepared to read the other stories in this series to find out what happens.
