Reader Review: This book was first published as a novella, but has since been re-printed as the first book of the Drake series. It gives a good outline for the Drake series, which are all excellent.

"Sarah Drake has come home." Ever since Damon Wilder sought refuge in Sea Haven, he's heard the same breathless rumor pass the lips of nearly every local in the sleepy coastal town. Even the wind seems to whisper her name-a reverie so powerfully suggestive that it carries the curious Damon to Sarah's cliff-top home, and seeks to shelter him there. But Damon has not arrived alone. A killer has tracked him to Sea Haven, and into the shadows of Drake House. But Sarah has her own secrets, and danger-as well as a desire more urgent than either has ever known-is just a whisper away...

Magic in the Wind

Chapter One

"Sarah's back. Sarah's come home." The whisper was overly loud and tinged with something close to fear. Or respect. Damon Wilder couldn't decide which. He'd been hearing the same small town gossip for several hours and it was always said in the same hushed tones. He hated to admit to curiosity and he wasn't about to stoop to asking, not after he had made such a point of insisting on absolute privacy since he arrived last month.

As he walked down the quaint narrow sidewalk made of wood, the wind seemed to whisper, "Sarah's back." He heard it as he passed the gas station and burly Jeff Dockins waved to him. He heard it as he lingered in the small bakery. Sarah. The name shouldn't carry mystery, but it did.

He had no idea who Sarah was, but she commanded such interest and awe from the townspeople he found himself totally intrigued. He knew from experience the people in the sleepy little coastal town were not easily impressed. No amount of money, fame, or title earned one deference. Everyone was treated the same from the poorest to the richest and there seemed to be no prejudice against religion or any other preferences. It was why he had chosen the town. A man could be anybody here and no one cared.

All day he had heard the whispers. He'd never once caught a glimpse of the mysterious Sarah. But he'd heard she once climbed the sheer cliffs above the sea to rescue a dog. An impossible task. He'd seen those crumbling cliffs and no one could climb them. He found himself smiling at the idea of anyone attempting such an impossible feat and few things amused him or intrigued him.

The grocery store was the center of town and

A beautiful start to a beautiful series

I was forced to buy this in ebook format because the print editions have sold out!

Christine Feehan writes a number of amazing series, and the Drake sisters series is charming. This is a shorter story than the six books that follow, but it is also the first, introducing us to the beloved characters we come to know.

The Drake sisters are magical sisters living in a small seaside town. They have a legacy to pass on, and part of this legacy is meeting the man they are destined to be with. One by one, from oldest sister to youngest, they commit to the person fate has chosen for them. And yet, at the same time, their incredible abilities are called upon to not only help each other and the town, but also to help innocent people in many places. At times they must face forces unknown to the rest of the world. It is a great premise.

Christine Feehan excels in grounding her stories in reality. No matter how fantastical her ideas, she writes in a way that makes everything seem real, believable. Of all of her series, this one is probably the most ‘real’ – it feels like this could really be happening. It is at least as much about the characters and their relationships as it is about magic.

This first book in the series is a must-read. Then go and buy the rest!

Damon Wilder has found sanctuary in Safe Haven, finding peace following a terrifying ordeal which left his partner dead and he physically and mentally scarred. Yet when the locals gossip that Sarah Drake is returning home, in fact he could swear the very wind is whispering her name, Damon becomes restless and agitated, determined to meet this woman who inspires such awe and respect in the townsfolk. Approaching the Drake family home; Damon immediately feels a sense of welcome and walking through the open gate his fate and that of Sarah's is sealed. Sarah and her six younger sisters (although only 4 Drake sisters physically appear in this book) come from a long line of magical women and each have a special power. Gifted with agility, grace and clairvoyance, it is prophesied that the Drake family home will open its locked gate and welcome the eldest daughter's true love, and within a year each sister in order of age will find their own destined match. But Damon is not just the man destined for Sarah and the man she quickly falls in love with, he is a man bowed under the weight of the shadow of Death and still a target for those that kidnapped and tortured him nearly a year ago.

This book has everything I want in a paranormal romance; featuring a family prophecy, strange powers, perfect destined mates, equally carefully crafted secondary characters, blossoming love and plenty of humour, intrigue and action woven into the romance. "Magic in the Wind" first appeared in the anthology "Lover Beware" published 2003; however it has been extended by an additional chapter. That said, this is still a very short novel (not quite 150 pages) and far too brief for me because I wanted more, more, more (hence the lost star). CF has firmly engaged my interst with her "Drake Sisters" books, an intended 7 book series with each sister taking a lead role and I will certainly be reading the next 5 full length novels currently available in this series.
