Reader Review: I must have walked past this series a hundred times. I'm a big Sookie Stackhouse, Rachel Caine, Cassie Palmer fan. I have quite a few series that are must buys for me, and then you drop down to the ...these aren't bad series that you read while you're waiting for your favorite author to crank out the next MUST READ addition to your favorite series. Then you go to the ones where you just know you aren't going to like it but you buy it anyway OR you have no idea and take a gamble...because it isn't the seemingly only 3-4 months a year that the good series are released in. LIke May or November. Now sometimes you wind up with winners, like the Tempest series. And Jennifer Estep has been a huge suprise.I never saw that coming, really hating the idea of an assassin as a protagonist. But surprises can be good things, and might I say...Kate Daniels can now be added to the list. I can't wait to work my way through all these books. I'm totally digging Curran. I think he let her get away with a little more sassy mouth then a man of his persuasion would have. So I'm a little afraid it (book two) can't live up to the first book, which although a little to graphically horror for me was exceptional. I really didn't think I'd like this series. Maybe it was the lion on the cover (although as a kid I was a big Aslan fan!), maybe it was all the comments on how bad ass and smart mouthed she is. I find this to be a really over used trope at this point. Does the world need another Anita Blake? The first one was so great...until she wasn't. But Kate won me over. She isn't always running into trouble, shooting her mouth off and then being surprised by the consequences. She sometimes is, but often she actually plans for the bad stuff to happen and when you think, oh...she blew it, turns out she had a plan in her back pocket. There was a wonderful example of this during her first face to face with a villain. She's brave, a great fighter, has some mysterious powers and sword and parentage (okay that does sound like it should be forumlaic) but it works. Maybe it is the great solid world building that every reviewer comments on, maybe it is the terrific side characters that stay with you, but ultimately I think it comes down to the main character. I like her. Whether I still will 2-3 books into this I can't say but I'm willing to bet $5.00 or so on it that I will. Which should just about cover the cost to download.

Mercenary Kate Daniels cleans up urban problems of a paranormal kind. But her latest prey, a pack of undead warriors, presents her greatest challenge.

Awesome book! Definitely recommend!!

I absolutely love the Kate daniels series!! While the actual relationship between Kate and curran is only hinted at in this book, the dynamics of their relationship are so interesting, and their banter will make you laugh out kiss. Kate's a guarded (but more powerful than anyone else knows met for hire, without many close friends, and Currans the leader of the 2nd largest pack of shapeshifter in America. Both are very powerful, and are stubborn as hell, but together you know they will be great. I loved both of them, and especially the fact that Kate can take care of herself, and doesn't need Curran to save her all the time, even if he'd be willing to. =)

Definitely recommend! 5 stars !

Top Favourite Series

Reviewer: A reader from Lesmurdie, Perth, NA AU

This is book 1 in the Magic Series by Ilona Andrews. So far it has become my absolute favourite series and well worth reading. If you like Sookie Stackhouse, Rachel Morgan Hollows Series or Cassandra Palmer Series, then you will love this.

The books are set in Atlanta where the worlds of Magic and Non Magic ripple across then city, the main character, Kate Daniels is a loner, who has some serious magic power, thanks to her parentage. Kate's biological father is the worlds most powerful magic user and will seek to destroy Kate if he finds out about her existence. Kate has never met him, but was instead raised and trained by his ex-warlord in secret. This 1st book follows Kate, as she finds out her guardian is murdered, Kate seeks to find out who is responsible and seek revenge, along the way introducing shapeshifters and providing a different take on vampires.

'Here kitty kitty kitty'

Reviewer: A reader from England

This book was excellent. Magic Bites isn't very long, but maybe that's part of the reason for the high quality -- the authors cut around the extraneous stuff to leave a well flowing and compelling murder mystery. Magic Bites is a genuine urban fantasy.

Kate Daniels is the protagonist. She's also a poor mercenary. Kate lives in a kind of alternate Atlanta where magic is well and truly out -- leaving the inhabitance to suffer the affects of magic as it constantly wipes out technology in unexpected waves. The Andrews do a wonderful job of detailing the world in which Kate lives.

Kate soon finds that her guardian Greg has been murdered and she won't rest until she finds out what has happened to cause his death. To solve the case she goes to the Order of Merciful Aid and is drafted to the case on a more official basis. The mystery of Greg's murder draws her into the ongoing friction between two powerful groups: the Pack and the People. The story sees her attempting to balance her own interests with the Packs and solve the crime.

Kate's world is inhabited by some interesting characters. Like Derek and Saiman. And of course Curran, a believable alpha who has a slightly mischievous streak but is firstly noble and dedicated to his Pack. I particularly found him interesting -- it was a small detail, but his name really suits him. Curran's tension and dynamic with Kate was one of the best things about the book in my opinion. I look forward to learning more about them all. Kate herself is tough minded and clever. But not too much that she can't humble herself and thank people for helping her, or be vulnerable. She also has a wonderfully droll sense of humour.

The world building is very impressive. I was surprised how such a convoluted world could be so well drawn in such a small expanse of story. Magic Bites offers a very unique, gritty view of how magic affects humanity and the results of such a force existing in the world.
