Reader Review: This is the second book in the Kate Daniels series. Kate is a mercenary and when some important maps from the were community gets stolen, she is hired to retrieve them. Although the heroine is a strong woman she isnât al powerful. She gets her but kicked a couple of times, but that doesnât stop her from reaching her goals. I liked this book a lot. The attractions between her and the leader of the weres Curran is growing hotter, but they still keep their distance. I canât wait for the next installment in this series.
As a mercenary who cleans up after magic gone wrong, Kate Daniels knows how waves of paranormal energy ebb and flow across Atlanta like a tide. But once every seven years, a flare comes, a time when magic runs rampant. When Kate sets out to retrieve a set of stolen maps for the Pack, Atlanta's paramilitary clan of shape shifters, she quickly realizes much more is at stake. The stolen maps are only the opening gambit in an epic tug of war between two gods hoping for rebirth, and if Kate can't stop the cataclysmic showdown, the city may not survive.

Magic Burns brightly

I absolutely adored this book. It was better than the first; it was a little bit different in that it was less a murder mystery and more a missing person's case this time around. Kate Daniels is a mercenary who also works for the Order of Merciful Aid in Atlanta. Kate isn't a fully fledged knight, but she works for them nonetheless and also 'enjoys' Friend of The Pack status.
In this book Kate finds herself taking charge of a street kid dumped on her by Red. The girl's mother is missing and she needs Kate's help to get her back. There's also cosmic trouble when a phenomenon known as a flare occurs -- a flare being a time when the already erratic magic waves run even more rampant. In terms of her personal life, Kate is busy entertaining 'fanciful notions' about a certain grey-eyed blond who is apparently very interested in her. As if she doesn't already have enough on her plate, she's asked by the Pack to retrieve some stolen property.
We see all the familiar faces from the first book back in Magic Burns. I was delighted to have more 'boy wonder' because I find his friendship with Kate to be adorable. I liked the new faces presented also; like Bran. Andrea was wonderful too! Curran is just a fabulous character. He's totally worthy of Kate and he gets a nice bit of character development as well. Their scenes are very well written and brimming with chemistry -- I laughed when Curran nearly dropped the dumbbell on himself because Kate was teasing him. I definitely like the speed at which their relationship is progressing.
The heart of the story was very much Kate's continuing relationship with Curran and her new charge. There were so many great lines in Magic Burns. That wonderful humour was very well placed. We were also treated to more hints as to Kate's true lineage.
The plot was very action packed with barely a moment left for a breather. And I loved every minute of it. From the first page to the hilarious final scene. Amazing!

Well, I could not put this down.
Kick butt and take names Kate is in even deeper trouble in this second installment. The reader is given more insight into what drives Kate.
The Alpha dance between Kate and Curran is a highlight.
