Reader Review: No one does fantasy and romance combined better than this author. I did like the first book of this series a bit more and the first Kushiel series just amazed me but this book is fun and engaging as well. The world of these books is just so detailed and interesting that all the books are worth reading, perhaps even more than once and that is a real compliment.
Imriel de la Courcel's birth parents are history's most reviled traitors, but his adoptive parents, the Comtesse Phedre and the warrior-priest Joscelin, are Terre d'Ange's greatest champions.
Stolen, tortured and enslaved as a young boy, Imriel is now a Prince of the Blood; third in line for the throne in a land that revels in art, beauty and desire. It is a court steeped in deeply laid conspiracies---and there are many who would see the young prince dead. Some despise him out of hatred for his mother, Melisande, who nearly destroyed the entire realm in her quest for power. Others because they fear he has inherited his mother's irresistible allure---and her dangerous gifts.
As he comes of age, plagued by unwanted desires, Imriel shares their fears. When a simple act of friendship traps Imriel in a besieged city where the infamous Melisande is worshiped as a goddess and where a dead man leads an army, the Prince must face his greatest test: to find his true self.

WE WERE ATTENDING a country fair when the news came. For a while, a long while, after our final return to Terre d'Ange, life was blissfully uneventful. Having had enough adventures to last me a lifetime, I was grateful for it. Whether in the City or at Montr

The second Kushiel trilogy starts off on a slightly less epic scale than the first, but I'm still enjoying my immersion into this fantasy world. I love delving into the details that make it come alive for me â religion (and how the fictional religion is used to explore universal questions and ideas). And while I'm still squeamish about the s&m aspects, I'm fascinated by the characters and can't stop wanting to know what happens next.
