Reader Review: In a simple language, the story speaks of Novalee Nation, a 17 year old pregnant girl from a poor background leaves her Southern town to go cross country to California. Her boyfriend, the father of her baby, abandons her in a Midwestern town. The book follows the trials and tribulations that follow Novalee in the town. She meets some town natives and starts to feel attached to the place. Her baby is born. She is cheated, threatened, but also loved and given a helping hand. Willy Jackson, the boyfriend, also has his share of joy and pains. A story about a brave young girl who matures into a strong independent single mother. Besides all the message of courage, patience, and focus, I found this story also reminds you about the importance of caring and loving the children.

Talk about unlucky sevens. An hour ago, seventeen-year-old, seven months pregnant Novalee Nation was heading for California with her boyfriend. Now she finds herself stranded at a Wal-Mart in Sequoyah, Oklahoma, with just $7.77 in change. But Novalee is about to discover hidden treasures in this small Southwest town--a group of down-to-earth, deeply caring people willing to help a homeless, jobless girl living secretly in a Wal-Mart. From Bible-thumping blue-haired Sister Thelma Husband to eccentric librarian Forney Hull who loves Novalee more than she loves herself, they are about to take her--and you, too--on a moving, funny, and unforgettable journey to . . . Where the Heart Is.
