Reader Review: Some of the best of movies based on King's tales came from the stories in this book. One of my all-time favorite movies, The Shawshank Redemption, came from here, as did Apt Pupil and Lean on Me. The last story, The Breathing Method, was the weakest in the collection but still interesting enough to hold the reader's attention. The Shawshank Redemption is extremely close to Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, the story, and by that I mean great. It is a fantastic story of human condition and hope, with a great and noble main character in Andy Dufresne. Apt Pupil is about a young man who loses both innocence and himself as he spirals into an obsessions with Nazi torture. The Body, which spawns Lean on Me (love River Phoenix in this) is a coming-of-age story with classic King twists: a group of friends on a literal journey, in this case, to view a dead body. The Breathing Method is a story within a story and tells and tale of the "weird and spooky" variety. I found this mix of short stories/novellas to be a quick and enjoyable read. Shawshank is the clear winner for me.

A collection of four novellas by the bestselling master, three of which became the basis for the hit films Stand by Me , The Shawshank Redemption , and Apt Pupil . So varied in tone that "you have to compare King to Twain, Poe-with a generous dash of Philip Roth and Will Rogers thrown in." -Los Angeles Times
