You love your Mac because it doesn't require you to be a genius to accomplish basic, everyday tasks. Got a new mouse? Just plug it into any free USB port and it's ready to use within seconds. Nice! Unfortunately, there are some devices that are more ornery and require a bit of extra effort on your part to get them connected and configured. In this chapter, I take you through a few such devices, including an external display, printer, fax, digital camera, scanner, camcorder, and even another Mac!
Using an External Display
If you have an extra external display - a monitor, television set, or projector - kicking around, you can connect it to your Mac in various scenarios:
* As a new desktop monitor. You can use the external display as a replacement for the monitor that came with your desktop Mac.
* As a notebook alternative. You can use the external display instead of the built-in monitor on your Mac notebook.
* As a desktop extension. You can use the external display to extend the desktop of your Mac. To do this with a Mac Pro or a Power Mac G5,you need to either add a second graphics card, or you need to replace the existing graphics card with one that supports two monitors.
