Design Basics
Design must embrace how people live and work in a space. Creation of spaces that enhance the client's lifestyle is achieved through careful design and design implementation.
Combining principles and elements of basic design, specific kitchen and bath design guidelines, and product technology in a creative approach will produce appropriate solutions in kitchen and bath space planning.
Following are basic guidelines of theory and application as they relate to kitchen and bath design.
Basic Design
Basic design falls into two categories, structural and decorative. Both categories can be easily recognized as they apply to kitchens and bathrooms.
Structural Design
Structural design relates to the size and shape of an object that is an integral part of the structure. Architectural elements (such as stone walls, wood beams, columns, arches, doors, and windows, among many others) will affect the space through shape, form, and mass. However, these elements work in concert with the structural design found in cabinetry, appliances, fixtures, and surfaces within the kitchen or bath.
Four characteristics essential to successful structural design are simplicity, good proportion, and appropriate and suitable materials.
* Simplicity: A kitchen or bathroom will be the structural framework within which decorative and structural components are installed. Such components include cabinetry, fixtures, and accessories. It is important to keep these elements simple to create a sense of balance and serenity within the space.
