Reader Review: This next story introduces Anita to a psyco, woman hating, serieal killer friend of Edward. They have been brought together to solve a mystery of people being kept alive by magic after having their skin flayed off. She must figure this out before it happens to others or Edwards friend kills her first!! Very good story!!
"In Obsidian Butterfly, Laurell K. Hamilton delivers an erotic, demonic thrill ride. Her sexy, edgy, wickedly ironic style sweeps the reader into her unique world and delivers red-hot entertainment. Hamilton's marvelous storytelling can be summed up in three words: Over the top. She blends the genres of romance, horror and adventure with stunning panache. Great fun!" -- Jayne Anne Krentz Whenever the phone rings before dawn something big is probably up, and the fact that Anita Blake has been up all night dealing with zombies doesn't make this call an exception. "Ted Forrester needs backup from Anita Blake, Vampire executioner," Edward tells her, using the pseudonym he keeps for those rare times when he needs a legal identity. And she owes him a favor. So by noon she's on a plane to Santa Fe, sun-drenched town of wealthy retirees, where in the last two weeks twelve people have been murdered. The dead ones had it easy; other victims have been completely flayed, but kept horribly alive by magic. Seeing them in the hospital, Anita feels uncharacteristically shaken. Edward's "Ted Forrester" identity has her nearly as spooked as the crimes: He's working with the local police, courting a likable widow with two kids, and generally making like a good ol' boy. Anita knows the real nature he's hiding beneath his mask of normality--and she finds "Ted" perhaps more frightening than Edward. But she must put aside her fear to help Edward hunt down the greatest evil she has ever encountered. It's ancient and devious--and, in the end, she will have to face it alone.

Obsidian Butterfly
Chapter One
I was covered in blood, but it wasn't mine, so it was okay. Not only was it not my blood, but it was all animal blood. If the worst casualties of the night were six chickens and a goat, I could live with it, and so could everyone else. I'd raised seven corpses in one night. It was a record even for me.
I pulled into my driveway at a quarter 'til dawn with the sky still dark and star-filled. I left the Jeep in the driveway, too tired to mess with the garage. It was May, but it felt like April. Spring in St. Louis was usually a two-day event between the end of winter and the beginning of summer. One day you were freezing your ass off and the next day it'd be eighty plus. But this year it had been spring, a wet gentle spring.
Except for the high number of zombies I'd raised, it had been a typical night. Everything from raising a civil war soldier for a local historical society to question, a will that needed a final signature, to a son's last confrontation with his abusive mother. I'd been neck deep in lawyers and therapists most of the night. If I heard, "How does that make you feel, Jonathan (or Cathy, or whoever)?" one more time tonight, I'd scream. I did not want to watch one more person "go with his or her feelings" ever. At least with most of the lawyers the bereaved didn't come to the graveside. The court-appointed lawyer would ascertain that the zombies raised had enough cognitive ability to know what they were signing, then he would sign off on the contract as a witness. If the zombie couldn't answer the questions, then no legal signature. The corpse had to be of "sound" mind

Edward and Anita meet their match

Edward needs a favour. He's up to his eyeballs in bloody remains and he's calling in his bargain with Anita to come back him up on a case. Someone or something is busy chowing down on the citizens of New Mexico. Anita gets quite excited at the idea of backing Edward up on his own turf.
Anita is surprised to find that this normally empty and cold person has a personal life, and shocked at his ability to be entirely different from the killer she's known. Anita faces more problems than just Edward baffling her -- there's a right-wing Christian police officer in charge in Albuquerque, and Edwards other backup on the case: Olaf a shady character and Bernardo.
'Obsidian Butterfly' is probably the best Anita Blake book of the series. It's very long but I never got bored with the length and felt the need to skim any passages. There were probably places that could have been trimmed down ever so slightly, but in general everything was interesting and compelling. I absolutely love and adore Edward so having him in this novel right in the thick of things was a real treat; I felt quite spoiled actually. 'Obsidian Butterfly' was incredibly satisfying on that front -- most of it focusing on Anita's complex relationship with Edward. Their friendship has always interested me and I found this book fascinating in the way it both fleshed out and explored it.
The story was gripping. I was on the edge of my seat to find out what was behind all the bodies and flaying of skin. The tension was built up really well and I thought the climax was well handled. I liked Anita soul searching and working things out internally... it seemed fitting that she should struggle with her morality under the watch of her former mentor. Edward proves to her that he's still that guy in many ways; giving her advice and comfort, still having things to teach her. Overall, an excellent and well written book!

This is probably gonna be my least favorite book in the whole series. Not only are my favorite vampires pretty much MIA, but some scenes were just a bit too much to take. I like the whole getting to know certain characters in depth, but Edward comes aound so infrequently that I really don't think that the longest book should be dedicated to finding out more about him. I don't think I would have minded it so much if it could have been done a bit more succintly or if it was about a more central character in the series. Edward is a killer, I get that, 1200 pages of insight didn't really change that. Though since some stuff that happens in this book is mentioned in future books I would probably still have read it just to be able to get the references.

This book was great! It was a nice change of scenery, taking place in New Mexico. Also lots going on, always exciting & suspensful. Big bonus was learning more about Edward. I did miss the boys though.

I really liked this story in the Anita Blake series. Obsidian Butterfly gives us a glimpse behind the mask of Anita's mysterious friend, Edward. As well as being an assassin for hire, Edward is engaged with a woman with two kids. Along with that surprise Anita has to deal with gruesome murders taking place in New Mexico.
I found this book to be refreshing. This book gave Anita the chance to think about her relationship with Richard and Jean-Claude as well as the realization of what could happen when she denies who she is. This book contained a good plot, interesting new characters and plenty of action. Definitely a good addition to the series.
