Since the first pharmacological description of an 'atypical' ß-adrenoreceptor and the cloning of the ß3AR gene, research interest in this receptor has grown considerably and many advances have been made in describing various properties of the ß3AR and its ligands. Thanks to the lipolytic activity of ß3AR ligands, several of these compounds have now entered clinical trials. Moreover, genotyping for the presence of a polymorphism in the ß3AR gene, possibly associated with increased risk of developing diabetes and/or obesity has become one of the possible targets for pharmacogenomic approaches to treat these growing health problems. The ß3-adrenoreceptor covers all the latest developments in the field. It begins with a general overview on the structure, function and expression of the ß3AR before discussing regulation of the receptor and the consequences of ß3AR gene knockout. A detailed description of the receptor's pharmacology and functional role in humans is also given, followed by an account of it's lesser-known vasodilatory role. Throughout, the ß3AR is placed in context by reference to ß1AR and ß2AR homologues as well as the more recently described, still putative, fourth ßAR Suitable for researchers from industry and academia, this timely book presents a clear and complete description of the ß3AR, with contributions from many of those involved in ß3AR research from the beginning.
