Reader Review: Rosemary and Rue focuses on the story of October 'Toby' Daye, a changeling who is half human and half Daoine Sidhe. After a case gone wrong Toby finds herself burned by both sides of her heritage leading to Toby denying the fae world and retreating fully into a mundane human life. Fate pulls her back in when a good friend is murdered: Evening Winterrose Countess. She is unable to resist Evening's dying curse which binds her to investigate her death. This book was simply fantastic, I truly enjoyed it. There was some weighty action that seemed to bury the plot a little towards the beginning of the final act, but overall it was a fast paced and well constructed first time novel. The book is first and foremost a murder mystery, which finds itself enclosed amidst the politics and ceremony of the fae world. Toby is a sympathetic character who really works hard to carve out a piece of the world for her own -- nothing comes easily to her and she struggles to do even basic things, like cast a glamour. Toby starts out as a fittingly stubborn and judgemental person, who finds it difficult to change her mind once it's made up yet her impressions and opinions of several of the characters experience evolution and change during the course of the novel. The characters that populate Toby's world are both colourful and complicated with believable relationships woven together in a complex multifaceted way. I think Tybalt was possibly my favourite character in the book; he comes across as mischievous and somewhat odious in his prejudice of changelings but there's an underlying honour there. It's clear his feelings for Toby are more complicated than just simple loathing. There was a somewhat Alice in Wonderland feel to things in places with looking glasses, red roses and moving doorways. There was a tangible sense of magic to the proceedings. I would certainly love a Rose Goblin for my very own, he was extremely cute.

One of the best Urban Fantasies of 2009

This book was on my Best of 2009 list. The story was clean and well written and the main character wasn't bogged down in the "I'm so bad-a$$" attitude that I am coming to hate in so many of the current crop of urban fantasy out there today. I don't mind a tough female character, but give her some common sense and a range of emotions, not just the bad-a$$ery. I am really looking forward to additional books in this series

Not Hamilton's Fairies

This was a good book. McGuire's writing similar to early Hamilton (Anita Blake, before the stories became porn). She presents a great story, vivid descriptions, deep characters, great dialogue; it feels real to the reader. I finished the book in one setting; it seriously held my interest. McGuire is definitely on my list of authors to recommend. I won't give away spoilers but will say that if you are interested in Rosemary and Rue based on the overview and blurb, buy this book.

This was a great book! It grabs you after the first few pages. I read this book straight through to the end. Can't wait for the next book in the series.
