To rest does not mean to cease all activity.
Bestselling author Dan Allender presents an insightful and fascinating look at the origins and purpose of Sabbath. Serving as volume three in The Ancient Practices Series , Sabbath examines the key issues of this oft-misunderstood day of the week.
This "day of delight," as instituted by God, has become a dirge for millions of believers. For many, it is simply a break from the busyness of the work week. So, what keeps us from properly understanding, sanctifying and celebrating this important day? Allender looks at not only the history of this discipline, going all the way back to ancient Israel, but also at the modern manifestations and misunderstandings of its practice.
Allender bases his premise on the Hebrew word for rest, Menuha , which is best translated as joyous repose, tranquility, or delight. It is through this lens that he resurrects this lost definition of what it really means to rest.

Sabbath
Chapter One
SELDOM SABBATH
Sabbath as a taste of the pleasure of God began for me with a six-month sabbatical several years ago. A friend, who knew that at the time my weekly Sabbath practices were shoddy at best-in reality, like a garden gone to weed-told me, "Normally, God only allows you to take on the large after you have been found faithful with the small, but in your case, he has allowed you to do it backward."
It was an apt and prescient warning. If I didn't know how to practice Sabbath on a weekly basis, how would I make use of days upon days that stretched out for six months?

My wife and I left a week after our youngest son was delivered to college to go to New Zealand for three months. We bought (okay, I bought) a motorcycle and proceeded on a three-month binge of fly-fishing and motorcycling through one of the most beautiful countries in the world.
It rained every day but five. We faced tempestuous winds that blew us hither and yon, and after many harrowing adventures we (okay, my wife) chose to sell the bike and retool our last three months in another locale. We chose Prague and then returned to Seattle for Christmas to be with our children and to do our laundry before the second half of the sabbatical.
During that month, we discovered that our ancient and beloved dog, Maggie, had cancer. My wife was diagnosed with skin cancer on the first day of the New Year. And two weeks before we were to depart, her mother went into the hospital with congenit
