A TEAM OF NIGHT WATCHMEN
The Proper Place to Slumber
Some people know instinctively that the way to get a baby to sleep is to put it in the crib and leave the room.
Those people live in a quieter and simpler universe than the rest of us.
You will never find them staggering through the day with black circles under their eyes. They probably can even find their house keys, know what day of the week it is, and remember where their desk is at work. And if you ask them how the baby is, they say "Fine" instead of growling.
As for me, I am writing this column with a 4-week-old baby strapped to the front of me.
And, yes, thank you, she is finally asleep.
The baby and I came up with this system for column-writing because we both now understand that cribs are not the proper place for babies to fall asleep. The baby has let me know that cribs are the places where babies are supposed to wail and thrash around until someone comes to rescue them.
Still, every few days or so, we try out the crib again, just to make sure the rules haven't changed. Who knows? It could suddenly become a habitable place where a baby could gently relax, close her eyes, and drop off to sleep.
We try it, but according to my friend Jean, we're not doing it with the right amount of Confidence and Perseverance.
You have to just know this is the right thing, Jean insists. You have to believe with every cell in your body that this baby is going to get into this crib and fall soundly asleep. Right now.
