Chapter One

the.1st trimester

Although no one would guess by looking at you that you're pregnant, the miracle of life has begun inside you. As your baby grows from a few tiny cells into a fully formed baby, you'll experience a natural process that is as wondrous physically as it is emotionally. This is a crucial time in your baby's development, and your body is working overtime to produce hormones and additional blood cells.

What's really exciting is that by the end of this 1st trimester your baby will actually look like a baby, complete with eyelids, a nose, a mouth, arms, and legs. Your sweet little baby will be able to move too. It will be a while before you see your beautiful baby, but the journey is well under way!

Even if you don't feel a thing (yet!), you're experiencing the amazing transformation of your egg into an embryo. Though the terms used to explain your body's changes during the first couple of weeks of pregnancy might sound clinical, they are a necessary part of describing the complex process of a baby's growth.

During week 1, your body sheds its uterine lining (that's when you get your period) and prepares to make a new one that's a hospitable nest for a fertilized egg. Meanwhile, about a thousand of your eggs make their way down the road to maturity.
