Chapter One
First-generation college students (FGS) often straddle different cultures between school and home. Because of this cultural disparity, FGS frequently encounter barriers to academic success and require additional support resources on campus. Simply offering more financial aid does not address the cultural and emotional challenges that these students experience. The volume's coeditors draw on their own first-generation college experiences to assert the necessity of this volume to assist college and university administrators, faculty, and staff who frequently work with FGS.

In early 2008, Vanessa Greene, head of multicultural education at Hope College, and I (Teresa Housel) created a new program to mentor first-generation college students (FGS), whose parents do not have a bachelor's or an associate degree. We created the program out of the recognition that FGS encounter academic, cultural, emotional, and financial difficulties when attending college. FGS are an increasing student population at a time when employers are demanding a college degree even for an interview in an ever-tightening economy. According to a 2007 study by the University of California-Los Angeles's Higher Education Research Institute, nearly one in six freshmen at American four-year institutions are first-generation (Saenz and others, 2007). First-generation college students comprise a small demographic of our college's applicant pool, but their numbers are increasing as our institution expands its multicultural diversity program.
