Week 1. The Prophet's Vision

Reflection
We begin with a premise found throughout the history of our faith: that God alone acts upon creation without our interference. The diversity of nature, its order and chaos, its adherence to justice—all these things are unfolding according to the laws of nature and are beyond our control. This premise leads us to humility, admiration, and accountability for our actions.
By studying the laws of nature, we gain insight into the creator of nature. When the prophets observe nature, they see a God who is personal and often unpredictable. But God is also just and will hold creation accountable for its behavior. Some of the prophets' harshest statements about God involve his dealings with unfaithful servants. Isaiah warns, for example, that God's justice could reduce the earth to its primitive, chaotic state, in which earth and sky would crumble.
God in the Hebrew texts is filled with power that could destroy us, but his justice is balanced by love and mercy. We therefore have reason to be accountable for our actions and try to live more justly.
In this week's reading, Amos calls us to seek good, not evil. Amos was one of the first classic prophets in the Hebrew Scriptures, and he used nature again and again to teach the faithful how to live and serve a just God.
