With the rise of President Barack Obama to presidential power comes a new awareness and excitement about effective communication. From the way people communicate in their families to the difficult communication between the U.S.A. and Iraq — effective communication skills are important and necessary in this 21st century global world.
Many people who experience or have common disorders are affected by communication disorder(s). These disorders may include auditory processing, language barriers, and speech-related problems. The causes of communication disorders may be brain injury, drug abuse, emotional disorders, and neurological disorders, pre or post-natal. According to current research, one in ten Americans of every age, gender, race, and socio-economical status has experienced various types of communication disorders; however, when we look further into the world of relationships and how families utilize communication, there is often a missing component. That component is listening. Listening involves more than one being quiet; it involves "active listening that is so essential to effective communication." Let's look at the following definitions of "active" listening and listening: The definition of "active" according to Webster's World Thesaurus is busy, lively, energetic, alive, purposeful, and aware.
