George Romanes (1848 - 1894) was a Canadian naturalist and psychologist. He initiated comparative psychology in which the similarity of cognitive processes and mechanisms between humans and animals are noted. Romanes agreed with Darwin except on three topics; the difference between wild and domesticated animals, structures which serve to distinguish allied species are often without any utilitarian significance, and the swamping influence upon an incipient species-split of free intercrossing. A Candid Examination of Theism was written by George Romanes under the pseudonym Physicus. Romanes used a pseudonym so that his arguments could be judged on their own merit without the reader having any preconceived ideas from his reputation. In this work Physicus sets forth arguments for the existence of God.
