Timothy Shay Arthur was an American author writing in the 19th century. He wrote about temperance and helped demonize alcohol for the public. His most famous book was Ten Nights in a Bar-Room and What I Saw There (1854). Arthur wrote numerous articles for the popular antebellum magazine Gode's Lady's Book. Arthur did much to articulate and disseminate the values, beliefs, and habits that defined respectable, decorous middle-class life in antebellum America. Danger; or, Wounded in the House of a Friend (1875]) is the story of the hazards of liquor. Arthur talked about the users of liquor being out to kill themselves and anyone they offered a drink to. Arthur's views on drinking were in many ways ahead of their time.
