Joel Mulholland recounts the heartening story of her very memorable grandmother. Between the ages of twelve and thirteen her grandmother received Christ as her Savior. He would serve as her rock of strength for all her days.
The death of someone close to your heart leaves an overwhelming sense of void. Suddenly, a life is taken, the body is lifeless, and the soul is gone. As a Christian, there is the struggle between knowing that they are truly at peace and the natural, human selfishness of wanting to keep them close. But with the sting of each death, comes new growth and maturity, the realization of how much their love was needed and how much was shared with others.
The author's grandma left many treasures; years of letters, journal entries, endless personal writings and remembered fellowship with family and friends will give a complete understanding of her journey. Then, the tributes from others and the impressions she left upon their own lives gives proof to her aspirations.
Through the tragic death of her father, marriage to a young GI, raising five boys and two girls, and college at eighty-two, as "Grandmere" put it: "I am ready to see my Jesus."

Ma Grandmere: At the Edge of Her Bed
Chapter One
(Psalm 16:6 The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage)
With grandma, everything started with God! She saw God's Word in everything. So with joy I began with this letter.
15 January 2005,
(My dearest granddaughter, Joel. We must always start in the beginning: in the Hebrew, bereshit, meaning creation, in the Greek, meaning birth or origin. Our God always begins with the positive. So, In the beginning God created. (Genesis 1:1) Then in the gospel (John 1:1). In the beginning was the word and the word was with God, and the word was God. Said is word; to mention, calling attention to something. First we must believe God's word, or there's no point in going on.) Those are the words grandma wrote to me at the beginning of 2005.
So we must begin with our family history. When I think about my family history, I have a real sense of where I came from, and a real knowing of who each member was, not just pictures of people and the past. Grandma brought them to life for me. Describing their personality, occupations, and their relation to her, and I. Grandma always made it very clear, saying, "I feel you need to know where you came from, to know where you are going. For the old can inspire the new, which in turn can be left for the generations to come and shall be blessed by our father in heaven."
