In a ski town divided over a new development, two strangers discover that coming of age-the second time around-is about wising up instead of growing up. Elaine McKenzie has spent fourteen years negotiating acquisitions for a Newport Beach real estate development firm. Now she's in charge of a project that will transform sleepy Devils Creek, California, into a world-class ski resort-and give her a shot at the corner office. But after she uproots her teenage daughter and relocates to the mountains, Elaine finds out that local environmentalists are organizing to oppose the project. Orthopedic surgeon Hart Cameron has been relieved of his roles as father and husband following the death of his son and his subsequent divorce. He goes home to Devils Creek and takes a job as a ski patroller in an effort to piece his life back together. Hart already knows what Elaine is about to discover: we're all just one bad fall away from losing everything.

Elaine McKenzie slowed the Honda Pilot and tilted her head one way and then the other, squinting slightly as she thought about the different angles they might use for promo shots in the Summit sales materials.Accelerating again, Elaine surveyed the buildings on either side of Main Street and decided that the town huddled at the foot of the mountain was considerably less spectacular. If all went well-and Elaine intended to see that it did-that would change. Before too long, people would be talking about Devils Creek in the same breath with Vail and Aspen. And the Summit, an upscale, retail and residential real estate development, would be the cornerstone of the town's new identity as a world-class ski resort.
Elaine had been involved with the joint venture between Pacific Development Corporation and Devils Creek Ski Area for over a year, but she never expected her boss, CEO Bob Tennent, to hand her the reins for the entire Summit project. Not that
