Chapter One

Faith was looking west watching the sunset. She was excited and happy about her coming marriage. John was so wonderful. She had been so busy she decided to rest for a moment. She loved watching sunsets.

As always the colors captivated her. This evening the colors were especially beautiful. The blues, reds, and yellows were spectacular. While she watched, the clouds drifted in the sky and formed into different patterns. She could see ships and faces. She tried to find features in the faces and give them the names of those she thought they resembled. This would be a clear evening, as the clouds did not appear to have the dark streaks in the bottom, which indicated rain.

Walking toward the house she thought of John. She was excited about their coming marriage. She liked planning for it. Mama and her sisters Katherine and Marie were excited too.

But that was enough dreaming. She needed to think about school. She was just finishing her first year of teaching in the school in LaSalle.

LaSalle was a pioneer town in Dakota Territory, where her family had come to homestead several years ago. Their nearest town had been Andover, which was to the south and Ft. Sisseton was to the north-east, now another town was to the south. It made travel seem safer when the distances between the towns were less.

Faith had been saving her school money for their wedding and for their new home. John was building a restaurant and they would be living in the rooms at the back of the building.

John's father had recently arrived from Maine. He had brought them lovely family furniture. It was a wonderful wedding
