When Richard McDowell reports at the induction center he is relieved that the draft is no longer a concern. He does have to think about killing in a war he does not believe in. He is optimistic about his plan to become a medic.
The army doesn't listen. Broken promises lead to jungle-training at Tigerland . Hope is dashed as he moves closer towards Vietnam, and further from any chance to re-train as a medic.
Richard fights with greater resolve to control his destiny. Friends come forth. Drawing helps him stay awake. He copes by playing music and observing; and learns to kill by day, while building a case against it at night: keeping the deal he made with the devil.
There is little reason for Richard to expect a favorable outcome. He goes with curiosity, to see the face of war. And he comes back to tell of the best and worst of man in the War and the Dark Stranger .

War and the Dark Stranger: Vietnam Days
Chapter One
Door to the UnknownI can't believe it is still happening: WAR that is. It is so futile and against all of our best interests. Yet it is and has been raging since I came home and since time began: it seems. I can't speak of before, for I am not a historian. And I cannot speak of now, for I cannot fathom the stupidity. I cannot even tell the story of the soldier who marched by my side. The best I can do is to tell my story.
I can still hear my mothers crying words, from her bedroom in our South Bay home, for all to hear:
I didn't raise my son to die in some war!
I knew what my veteran father thought about service. I felt the same way as he did as he drove me to the induction center in L.A. to deliver his legacy with a proud and knowing smile. He was not political: neither was I. I had asked him about Vietnam, in reference to his experiences in WWII and in the Korean War, and he said I don't know about that one! He never talked about his experiences, except once: when I asked him about his nightmare.
He would sometimes sweat and moan and cry out in his sleep and wake up shivering in recall. He was frank and said it was about killing a Japanese soldier. And he told me how it happened. It was his nightmare and I chose not to repeat it. Taking a last look at his bright green eyes, he simply said, don't volunteer! So I said good-bye to dad and my '57 Chevy.
From that quiet moment, I then walked the remaining blocks towards a humming mayhem of barks and whispers, passing people walking in and out of the thick fog. There were numerous curb-side farewells as young men were delivere
