Big Horn, Wyoming, and Coronado, California, are as different as two places could be. One is located at the base of the picturesque Big Horn, Mountains and the other is a sophisticated tourist destination across the bay from San Diego. Despite the distance between them, fate brought two men together-one from Big Horn and the other from Coronado-and together they made a connection that lasted a lifetime.

Victor and Connections to Pacific Spiny Lobster shares the compelling story of how lifelong educator Marvin Nottingham and Wyoming rancher Victor Garber built a friendship linked by unique characters each met along the way as they traveled, worked on the ranch, and dove for lobster in the Pacific Ocean. From Sonny Pamperin, who was eaten by a shark, to "Sharky," a fighter pilot who required hundreds of stitches to repair a bump from a shark, Nottingham shares a vibrant exploration of experiences that provide an unforgettable glimpse into the lives of two men.

In his memoir, Nottingham offers a series of entertaining vignettes that prove that life is definitely more fun when one has a good buddy by his side.

Victor and Connections to Pacific Spiny Lobster: Tales of Land and Sea

Chapter One

Victor

"At least they can't say I died young." That was classic Victor Garber, said with a pixie Jack Nicholson grin, which is an integral part of his charm. The occasion was a family celebration of his ninetieth birthday, September 19, 2009.

It was about then that I decided I should try to chronicle his life because Victor, in my judgment, is in a class by himself. Maybe these reflections will make that assertion credible and engaging.

Victor was born on September 14, 1919, in a log cabin three miles west and three miles south of Big Horn, Wyoming—population two hundred. He was the second son of Vie Willits and LaRoy Garber. He had an older brother, Orr, who would die too young, and a younger brother, Eugene, my near contemporary, born in 1924. Gene's story is a classic tale too and deserves a chronicle of its own.

During his ninety-plus years, Victor has had a wealth of experience that has produced a treasure trove of stories. A few are captured here, told with Victor's characteristic pathos, insight, and humor. The reader's inability to see his facial expressions, hear the lilt in his voice, and see his ubiquitous smile is a considerable handicap. Still, his innate sense of humor shows through.

I refer to Victor as my surrogate father because he and his family knew that when my father died when I was seven, my mother would have trouble raising my adopted younger sister and me. We lived in Big Horn, but as I grew older I spent more and more time as a part-time employee of the Garber's.

In the process, they ta
